Introduction

Julie Green: The Last Supper

The Last Supper is a long-running visual art and research project by artist Julie Green (they/them/theirs), illustrating the final meals requested by approximately one thousand people on death row in the United States. Green (1961-2021) began the series in 1999 after reading in a local Oklahoma paper about the final meal requested by a person awaiting execution. By the time of Green’s death twenty-two years later, the artist had painted images of final meals on nearly one thousand secondhand ceramic plates with cobalt blue mineral paint and then refired them in a kiln. In late 2021, Green placed The Last Supper in a trust to ensure the continued conservation and exhibition of the artwork.

Today, the artwork is part of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art collection and will be touring the country through a partnership with Art Bridges Foundation. Boise Art Museum is the first organization to showcase The Last Supper in its entirety. The work encourages viewers to consider the U.S. prison system and the way society thinks about the people within it. By linking us together through our basic need for food and the rituals associated with it, Green sparks a human connection and opens our hearts and minds to individuals who are often disregarded and forgotten.

Visual Descriptions

Visual description of Installation

Nearly 1,000, white plates and dishes, hand-painted with illustrations of food and drink in shades of blue, cover the walls in two gallery rooms. The dishes are densely hung within a 6-foot-tall arrangement, covering most of the surface of three adjoining walls in each gallery. The dishes vary in shape, size, and orientation—from small, 5” circular plates to 12” oval platters with scalloped edges. Non-traditional plate shapes, such as squares, hearts, and fish, are also included. While predominantly white in color, some of the plates contain the original manufactured details, such as borders and decorative patterns, in addition to the hand-painted blue illustrations of food. Each plate is unique, and the meals are painted on the plates in a variety of styles and the artist’s perspectives. Many contain recognizable brands of soda, candy bars, and fast-food packaging. Some of the plates contain no food at all, but instead have hand-painted text, the majority of which read “none,” or “no final meal request.”

The plates are arranged alphabetically by state, beginning in gallery 6 and ending in gallery 8, with numbers next to each plate that correspond with a gallery guide, presented in hard copy in the galleries and accessible online. The guide includes the state in which the execution occurred, the date of the execution, and the details of the final meal that the artist chose to note.

Visual descriptions of select plates from Gallery 6:

Plate # 34: A small, white rectangular plate is displayed vertically with hand-stenciled blue words in a central column that read “request: eat from a vending machine with family members.”

Plate #86: A round white dinner plate, mounted on the wall, features a still-life style illustration of food, hand-painted in its center with blue paint. A bear-shaped honey container appears in the foreground, with three over-easy eggs behind it. Wavy strips of bacon, several slices of bread topped with 2 pats of butter, and a single juice glass appear in the background.

Plate # 268: A white, ceramic, oval-shaped plate is displayed vertically, hand-painted with blue illustrations and blue text. At the top, stenciled text reads: “he never had a birthday cake so we ordered a birthday cake for him.” A painting of a large round birthday cake topped with a ring of candles appears below the text, followed by a plus sign and a painted pepperoni pizza, with one slice being lifted from the pan. The word “pizza” is stenciled at the bottom of the plate. The outer edge of the plate is decorated with an intricate, manufactured floral border in blue, light green, and red.

Plate #368: A circular white dinner plate is mounted on the wall and features several fast-food items illustrated in blue paint in its center. In the foreground of this still-life style arrangement is a sandwich on a bun, sitting in a clamshell paper box with the recognizable McDonald’s double-arch logo on its lid. Behind the box, a burger with a sesame seed bun is shown on top of its paper wrapper with the word “Wendy’s” in the corner. Curly fries and a can of Pepsi appear in the background. The border of the plate is decorated with manufactured dark blue stars in various sizes.

Plate #413: A white, oval-shaped platter with gold trim is displayed vertically on the wall and features an arrangement of food items from a bird’s eye view, illustrated in blue paint. A large pecan pie is depicted at the top of the platter. Moving clockwise around the platter, there are illustrations of several shrimp with a dipping sauce, a partial view of the top of a bottled beverage, a bag of ice with an illustration of a penguin, and the word “ice” on it, a large oblong steak, a baked potato with toppings, and several slices of bread. In the center of the platter, on top of a manufactured faint leaf design, is blue hand-written text that reads “Requested but did not receive.” To the right, additional text, in decorative blue font reads “Oklahoma 29 April 2014.”

Visual descriptions of select plates from Gallery 8:

Plate #522: A White circular dinner plate with a dark blue rim is displayed on the wall. On the left side is a blue painted illustration of a partial view of a person, holding a pizza on a large flat paddle. Handwritten blue text in the lower third of the plate reads “Turned down final meal, but requested that a vegetarian pizza be given to a homeless person. Request denied by Tennessee DOC. However, the public sent 170 pizzas to a shelter.”

Plate #530: A small, white, wall-mounted plate has been painted to look like a cafeteria tray, divided into four square sections, each containing a different food. The top right square contains a large taco. Moving clockwise around the plate, the other squares contain a pile of beans, corn on the cob, and macaroni noodles. Along the bottom edge of the plate, hand-stamped text reads: “Texas 11 December 2019.”

Plate #708: A box of Kraft brand Macaroni and Cheese, on the left, and a box of Rice-a-Roni, on the right, have been hand-painted in blue in the center of a white, circular dinner plate. The two boxes appear to be three-dimensional with a shadow painted under the boxes and a horizon line painted behind the boxes.

Plate #878: A white oval plate, displayed horizontally on the wall, is covered from edge to edge with very large hand-stenciled blue text that reads “Justice. Equality. Peace.”

Plate #997: A small, white, oval-shaped platter is displayed vertically on the wall. Two pints of Haagen-Dazs ice cream are hand-illustrated in blue paint in the center. The ice cream containers are shown resting on a flat surface, one in front of the other, with a horizon line behind them. The container in the foreground reads “Mint Chip.” The container in the background has its lid removed and a spoon in it. Handwritten blue text at the top of the platter reads “Federal,” and at the bottom it reads “11 June 2001.”

In 2018, Julie Green began the First Meal series, in which each plate depicts the first meal eaten by an exonerated individual after their release from prison. The person whose meal is the subject of this artwork, Greg Wilhoit, was wrongfully convicted and spent five years on death row before being exonerated based on new evidence from one of the nation’s top forensic odontologists, who testified that bite marks on the victim’s body could not have been made by Wilhoit.

“Naively, I thought these paintings would be more uplifting,” wrote Green. “Of course, the meal is celebratory, but there is nothing compared to the lost years.”

Juan Melendez was wrongfully convicted and spent 17 years, eight months, and one day incarcerated on death row. Melendez was exonerated after a taped confession by the real killer was obtained.

In addition to losing their freedom, years of youth, educational opportunities, time to socialize, and build a family, as well as the overall ability to create a healthy life for themselves, people who are wrongfully convicted must then fight lengthy legal battles to receive compensation. The National Registry of Exonerations estimates that 41 percent of those who have sought compensation from their states have been paid.
