Introduction

Here We Have Idaho: Belonging
Sofía Jaramillo + Ceci Richardson-Salvador

“Here We Have Idaho: Belonging” showcases artwork by Sofía Jaramillo and Ceci Richardson-Salvador, two Idaho-based artists who engage with the state’s natural landscape through photography.

Sofía Jaramillo’s portraits confront the history of winter sports and Eurocentric ski culture across the American West by evoking the narrative power of a world that equally accepts people of all skin colors.

Ceci Richardson-Salvador’s artwork is informed by decades of river rafting, rock climbing, and hiking. Using experimental techniques, such as long exposure, focus manipulation, and color shifts, Richardson then combines her photographs with fly fishing line, embroidery, and topographical maps to form large-scale installations that are part of her ongoing exploration of reconnecting with nature, memory, and ourselves.

About | Ceci Richardson-Salvador

Ceci Richardson-Salvador

Ceci Richardson-Salvador’s artwork articulates the essentiality of nurturing the bond between humans and the natural world. Over the past twenty years, Richardson-Salvador has spent countless days floating the Salmon River, photographing it, and hiking along its banks. This site-specific installation, Homage to the Salmon River, features photographs, taken during her time on the Salmon River, along with fly fishing lines, drums, and topographical maps. These materials come together in an installation that represents the intensity of connecting to nature’s vastness by interacting with the water. Richardson-Salvador’s method of incorporating embroidery and sewing into her photographs is a tactile, human act, rooted in her childhood and ancestral memory. This practice is performed in defiance of AI-generated imagery. The repetition and undulation of the needle through paper echoes the shifting surface of the flowing river.

Ceci Richardson-Salvador was born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1972. Ecuador has one of the richest, ecologically diverse habitats in the world.  It is Ecuador’s landscape that provided the foundation for Richardson-Salvador’s love and understanding of nature. Her interest in biology, ecology, and extreme sports, such as rock climbing, rafting, and kayaking, served as channels for travel in nature.  Richardson-Salvador received her BFA from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in 1995 and moved to the United States in 2001. She has received honorable mentions from the prestigious International Photography Awards and grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

About | Sofía Jaramillo

Sofía Jaramillo

Inspired by her experiences growing up in Sun Valley, Idaho—home to America’s first ski resort—Sofía Jaramillo created A New Winter, a series of large-format photographs that express her desire for a future in which everyone feels they belong. The series re-imagines the first Eurocentric images of skiing in the United States, specifically those displayed in the lobby of the Sun Valley Lodge. Her photographs, all staged within the state of Idaho, challenge the stereotypes and the exclusivity historically perpetuated by depictions of ski culture. Jaramillo disrupts traditional narratives and promotes diverse representations in winter sports by placing people of color at the center of her artwork.

Sofía Jaramillo was born in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 1991, and grew up in Sun Valley and Boise, Idaho. Jaramillo earned her BA from Seattle University in Washington. She has been the recipient of grants and awards for her photography, including the National Geographic Society Explorers Grant and the Center for Photography’s Blue Earth Fiscal Sponsorship Award. Jaramillo’s films have been screened at numerous venues and festivals, including National Geographic Short Film Showcase, Mountain Film Festival, Banff Film Festival, Sun Valley Film Festival, and DC Environmental Film Festival.
