BAM Studio Art Classes
BAM’s studio art program encourages the creative abilities of all participants by offering experiences in a variety of art media which provide opportunities for making connections with BAM’s exhibitions. We provide quality instruction for all ages in a small-class, non-competitive, and enjoyable atmosphere. Class size is limited to optimize learning. Participants must pre-register to reserve a space as class size is limited.
Experiences for Adults
Mutli-Session Course: Watercolor Open Studio
Session I: Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2013
Session II: Tuesdays, June 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2013
Time: 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Explore watercolor painting with the Boise Art Museum. BAM’s open studio format combines basic techniques for beginners, refreshers for dabbling artists, and helpful hints and tips for seasoned painters. No prior drawing or painting experience is necessary. Course combines demonstrations, discussions, and individualized instruction. All levels are welcome.

High School Portfolio Review

High School students are invited to gather and open their portfolios to representatives from art and design colleges of the Northwest. This is a unique opportunity for high school artists to receive individual feedback about their work from professional reviewers. No RSVP required, but wait time varies. Plan to stay at least 2 hours.
Surreal Photography and Design: Studio Workshop

As easy as Instagram! This workshop is inspired by artists Kahn and Selesnick who create panoramic photos and accompanying fictional narratives. Learn to twist and transform reality with a few tips and tricks from experts in set design and studio photography. Bring your digital camera or camera phone.

Experiences for Children
ART CLASSES for Children
BAM’s studio art program encourages the creative ability of all participants by facilitating experiences in a variety of arts media and making connections with original works of art in BAM’s exhibitions. Through reputable artists and educators, we provide quality instruction for all ages in a small-class, non-competitive and enjoyable atmosphere. Children are required to be checked in and out of classes and camps at BAM by a parent or guardian each day.
Offered for students ages 4-12
Within each class, students are grouped by age to provide individualized instruction and attention. Indicate morning or afternoon session when registering.
MORNING SESSION: 10:00 a.m. – Noon
AFTERNOON SESSION: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Creative Culture
Find inspiration in artwork from cultures in Africa, North America, and Papua New Guinea! Explore both old and new techniques for weaving, painting, and ceramics.

ART CAMPS for Children
Add excitement to your child’s summer with one or all of these fun-filled weeks of arts experiences with professional visual artists and educators. Each camp is limited to 20 students for individualized attention and safety. Students should dress for messy and outdoor activities and wear comfortable shoes for walking. Bring a sack lunch, sunscreen, hat, and water bottle each day. A Medical Information Card for each student will be mailed when the registration form is received. The student may attend only after the form has been completed, signed and returned to BAM. Children are required to be checked in and out of classes and camps at BAM by a parent or guardian each day.
Around the World: My First Camp

Longer than a class, but not an all day experience, this unique “mini” camp is offered especially for younger students ready for their first BAM Art Camp! Camp participants will discover masks, textiles, instruments, and other artwork from different cultures in North America, Africa, and Papua New Guinea. Each day will bring new activities and excitement with hands on art-making experiences and gallery exploration.
Park Explorers (with the Idaho Historical Museum and Zoo Boise)
June 17 - 21, 2013
Ages: 7-12
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
$150 ($180 non-members)

Be an active explorer of artwork, history, and animal wildlife! This camp highlights some of the cultural institutions in Julia Davis Park and gives students a chance to learn more about each organization through hands-on activities and interactive experiences. Each day will be spent discovering the unique features of a new location, including the Boise Art Museum, Zoo Boise, and the Idaho Historical Museum. Participants will begin and end each day at the Boise Art Museum. (Register for this camp through the Boise Art Museum. Members of the participating institutions may receive the discounted member rate for this camp. Please indicate institution membership on registration form.)
Art and Animals of Africa (with Zoo Boise)

Take an imaginary expedition to Africa with the Boise Art Museum and Zoo Boise! BAM’s exhibition of objects and artwork from African cultures will inspire wildlife exploration and art making in this week-long camp. Students will learn about the meanings of animal symbols in masks, baskets, and textiles and study unique animals and their habitats. Mornings will be spent at Zoo Boise and afternoons will be spent at the Boise Art Museum.
Tell Me a Story

Spin a fantastic story! Surrounded by narrative in portraits, panoramas, and material objects in BAM’s exhibitions, camp participants will discover the art of storytelling through images. Students will examine Kahn and Selesnick’s tales of Mars, interpret narrative symbols in the work of Kehinde Wiley, and hear legends from Oceania, Africa, and North America. During this week-long experience, students will experiment with a variety of media to create their own imaginative images and stories.
